Khadar ceremony for newly appointed CEO of Wangchhu Hydroelectric Project
A Khadar ceremony was held at the DGPC Corporate Office on February 14, 2026, to formally congratulate Sonam Wangdi on his appointment as the Chief Executive Officer of the 570 MW Wangchhu Hydroelectric Project. The event symbolized the collective goodwill and support of colleagues and well-wishers alike for his success in the new post and their confidence in his leadership to see the successful implementation of project.
Sonam Wangdi has been heading the Projects & Contract Department of DGPC over the last couple of years. In his 2-3 decades of service in the hydropower sector, he served in various capacities contributing extensively to project development, engineering management, and contract administration across major hydropower initiatives.

Sonam Wangdi holds a Bachelor in Civil Engineering from Visvesvaraya Regional College of Engineering, Nagpur, India, and a Master in Hydropower Development from the Norwegian Institute of Science and Technology, Norway.
About the project:
The 570 MW Wangchhu Hydroelectric Project is aligned with Bhutan’s Renewable Energy Roadmap to achieve additional 15,000 MW of hydropower and 5,000 MW of solar installed capacity by 2040. The project is being implemented under the umbrella of an overall strategic partnership between DGPC and the Adani Group to develop 5,000 MW in hydropower projects in Bhutan.
