Built at Scale: 9 Power Plants and Embedded Generations Delivering 2,471 MW Over 17 Years
Druk Green Power Corporation Limited (DGPC) is Bhutan’s national clean energy company and the backbone of its carbon-negative economy. Incorporated on December 24, 2007, as the sole generation utility, DGPC operates 2,471 MW of capacity across major hydropower plants such as Chhukha, Tala, and Mangdechhu, which are crucial to Bhutan's electricity supply and export revenues.
Hydropower revenues are vital for Bhutan's economy, supporting GDP growth and fiscal sustainability. Following the consolidation of the Mangdechhu hydropower plant in 2024, DGPC significantly increased its electricity revenues, solidifying its role in national energy security.
As the architect of Bhutan’s future energy sector, DGPC aims to expand renewable capacity under its Corporate Strategy Plan for 2025 to 2040, targeting 15 GW of new hydropower and 5 GW of solar capacity, while enhancing operational efficiency and enabling power exports through bilateral agreements.
Beyond generation, DGPC has developed in-house and subsidiary capabilities in turbine fabrication and repair, automation systems, consultancy services, research and development, and maintenance excellence, improving system reliability and lifecycle performance. Looking ahead, the company’s national clean-energy mandate includes additional hydropower, expanded solar generation, reservoir and pumped storage, battery energy storage system, and multiple delivery models, including direct development, public-private partnerships, and independent power producer participation.
