Bhutan’s Power Sector

Current Status & Future Outlook

Bhutan's renewable energy sector is primarily based on hydropower, which serves as the backbone of the country's electricity generation and is a vital component of its economic resilience. DGPC, the national hydropower utility, boasts an installed capacity of 2,453 MW. To ensure better energy security, system stability, and a dependable power supply throughout the year, the DGPC aims to achieve an additional 5,500 MW capacity in the next five years through investments and development of small hydropower and solar projects. Looking ahead to 2040, an impressive 15 GW of new hydropower and 5 GW of solar capacity are expected to be added by Bhutan. Domestic energy supply will not only be strengthened by this ambitious plan, but export potential will also be boosted and regional energy cooperation promoted.
