Lunana Mini Hydropower Project Implementation Underway
The implementation of the 500 kW Lunana Mini Hydropower Project is now underway, with the official handing over of the project site on March 22, 2026, to the M/s Chhimi RD Construction Pvt. Ltd., the contractor for Package I (Civil and HM works). The contractor has initiated the airlifting of the construction equipment, materials and camp infrastructure from March 23, 2026. This marks a significant step towards the commencement of construction works for Bhutan’s first high-altitude hydropower project.

Funded by the Government of India under the Project Tied Assistance framework, the project is being implemented under Druk Hydro Energy Limited, a subsidiary of Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC). The civil works was awarded to M/s Chhimi RD Construction Pvt. Ltd. on January 7, 2026, and physical works are expected to begin in April, with initial deployment of manpower, including De-suups.
The project will deliver reliable and sustainable electricity to the remote communities of Lunana, supporting improved livelihoods and rural development.
