Dorjilung Hydroelectric Power Project (DHPP)
Dorjilung Hydroelectric Power Project (DHPP) is located in eastern Bhutan along the right bank of Kurichhu, across Mongar and Lhuentse dzongkhags. The project is being jointly developed by DGPC and Tata Power Company Limited, India, with the World Bank Group (WBG) as the lead financier. This partnership combines national expertise, international experience, and strong financial support to deliver a world-class hydropower facility. The dam site lies about one kilometer upstream of Rewan village, while the powerhouse is located near Lingmithang.

Socio-Economic Benefits and Sustainability
DHPP is expected to generate broad socio-economic benefits, especially for eastern Bhutan. During construction, the project will create an estimated 4,000 to 5,000 direct and indirect jobs each year. Local communities will gain from increased business opportunities, higher demand for housing and transport, improved access roads, and greater market activity related to food supplies and services.
For the nation as a whole, DHPP reinforces the energy sector’s vital role in economic growth. It will provide reliable electricity for households and industries while generating significant revenue through cross-border power trade. At the regional level, DHPP will support South Asia’s transition towards cleaner energy by supplying hydropower during periods of high demand, strengthening Bhutan’s leadership as a carbon-negative country and a champion of climate action.
Once operational, it will supply reliable clean energy to Bhutan’s power system and enable the export of surplus electricity to India. Such exports will be particularly valuable during the summer months, when regional electricity demand peaks.
