Hydropower

Clean energy generated from the power of flowing water

Introduction to Hydropower

Hydropower Generation Supporting Bhutan’s Clean Energy Economy

Hydropower has shaped Bhutan’s national economy, enabling the country to remain one of the world’s few carbon-negative nations while supporting long-term economic development. Electricity exports to India represent Bhutan’s largest source of national revenue, making hydropower central to both fiscal stability and energy security.

Bhutan’s rivers, flowing through steep Himalayan terrain, provide significant potential for renewable electricity generation and form the foundation of the country’s hydropower development. Druk Green Power Corporation Limited (DGPC) is responsible for operating and managing many of Bhutan’s major hydropower assets. DGPC currently manages 2,453 MW of installed hydropower capacity across its operational portfolio. With more than four decades of operational experience, the company applies end-to-end, water-to-wire hydropower expertise across all stages of plant development, operation, and maintenance.

Key Hydropower Projects

DGPC’s hydropower portfolio includes projects across multiple categories, including large hydropower plants, smaller generation facilities, and projects under modernisation, reflecting the diversity of Bhutan’s hydropower infrastructure.

Today, DGPC manages a portfolio of hydropower plants located across Bhutan’s river basins, including major facilities such as:

Tala Hydropower Plant
1,020 MW
A major capacity expansion that significantly strengthened Bhutan’s export-led energy economy.
Mangdechhu Hydropower Plant
720 MW
A key milestone commissioned in 2019, marking a new phase in DGPC’s growth and operational scale.
Chhukha Hydropower Plant
336 MW
One of Bhutan’s earliest large hydropower projects, where the country’s electricity export economy began.

Partnerships, Economy & Sustainable Energy

Hydropower development in Bhutan has been strengthened through international cooperation, particularly with the Governments of India and Austria, reflecting a long-standing partnership model in the country’s energy sector.

By generating electricity from water resources, Bhutan is able to maintain a clean energy system while supporting economic development and regional electricity demand.
